Format: Is it MiniDV?
DV offers the best resolution. Unlike Sony's digital-8, DV cameras are manufactured by multiple vendors.
Number of CCDs: One or three?
More CCD's generally offer better color separation which translates into a sharper picture.
Zoom: How much is optical, how much is digital.
Digital zoom will use a computer to enlarge the image, but the result will create a more blocky image. Don't be fooled by the large digital zoom numbers, it is the optical zoom that is important.
Size of CCD: How big is the CCD?
The bigger the better. The range is usually between 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch.
Resolution of CCD: How many pixels are on the CCD.
A greater amount of pixels help increase picture quality.
Progressive scan lens?
Cameras with a progressive scan lens have the capability of recording images in a non-interlaced mode. Non-interlaced means that each frame is a complete image. This helps in two ways: better Internet movies and makes better still images when capturing from tape. Warning: some of the cameras that claim to have progressive lens only apply it to a special still image mode.(i.e. Sony PC100)
Microphone quality: Placement and quality.
Be aware of how close the microphone is to the camera motors. Some microphones are so sensitive, they can pick of the sounds of the tape motor and even the autofocus motor.
